The Lady in My Garden

Hey Greensters!

Patricia here! Today, I want to talk to you about a Lady bug that I found in my garden.

So as you all know, ladybugs are beetles. Some people are a fan of ladybugs because of its color and its cute polka dots, but farmers are fans of ladybugs because ladybugs eats plant-eating insects such as aphids.

Ladybugs are also called Lady beetles or Ladybird beetles. Some beetles are very effective for our crops because they eat plant-eating insects but some feeds on plants.

There are lots of different ladybugs in this world. The one that I found is coloured yellow. It is a family of Conccinellidae. The Coccinellidae are a family of small beetles, ranging from 1 to 10 mm (0.04 to 0.4 inches). They are commonly yellow, orange, or scarlet with small black spots on their wing covers with black legs, heads and antennae. Their bright colour represents a warning to birds and other potential predators that they don't taste good. If they are attacked by a predator, Ladybugs gives off a yellow, foul-smelling liquid, which is actually their blood, from their leg joints.

If you find Ladybugs do not kill it, for they are also living things. Move them to a save place where nothing can harm them but when you pick it up, make sure that you don't smash it because it is so soft.

By the way, there are many legends and lore behind this beautiful tiny creature, like:
  • If you kill a ladybug, it is said that it will bring sadness and misfortune for you. :)
  • In France, they believe that if a ladybug lands on you, whatever your illness will go away with the ladybug.
  • When a ladybug is landed on your hand, just make a wish and your wish will come true.
Whatever the legends and lore are, I always like to see the ladybugs around my garden because it means my garden is environmental-friendly to them. :))

Thank you for reading. :)

Best Regards,
Patricia xx
