The Green Island: Planting the Coral Reefs (part 1)

Learning about coral reefs with Mr. Wayan Logo
Dear Greensters,

Coral, a very colorful animal that has interesting facts. Corals are very interesting and made The Green Team Indonesia wanted to know more about it.

The Green Island is a perfect place to know about the corals. Mr. Wayan is the guide. He told us some facts about the corals. Corals are animals, not plants. Corals can be cut into small pieces, but some parts aren't allowed to be cut. Corals grow 0.5 - 1 cm every month. After 15 minutes without sea water, corals get stressed and give away saliva that marked the time when it needs water. Small sea creatures live in corals such as small fish, prawns and other creatures.
Corals produce saliva when they get stressed

Corals with our names
The Green Team had 1 coral for each member to be planted under the sea. Most members went snorkeling under the sea to plant their corals. The corals contain our names. After some few months we could check out our corals and see how it grows. Our names will still be visible.

Not just corals, The Green Island also contain seahorses, sharks, turtles and fish. Seahorses also have interesting facts. Seahorses are different from other animals. The male seahorses are the ones that are pregnant. Each time they are pregnant, theycontain around 100 eggs, but the chances of it living is 10%. Seahorses can stay without sea water for 5 minutes. We took photos with the seahorses and the corals.

This has been a very fun and educational day. Especially the moments when something fun happens such as the moments when we feed the sharks, see turtles and starfish and the time
Ready to plant the corals in 2 meters down below
when we play. Very strange moment happened, fish from their pond were jumping everywhere. It was very weird because it has been the first time they saw this moment happening. The Green Team had a memorable day. We will always visit places that will help us to know more about the environment.

Note:
  • The Green Island is a floating dock located in Serangan Island (Bali). It is managed by fishermen under the team of 'Kelompok Nelayan Karya Segara' with Mr. Wayan Logo as the leader.
  • Thanks to our mentor Mr. Dewa Gede Agung Dharmayasa for the nice photos.

Best Regards,
