A Visit to "WASTE BANK" (Part 1)

Hey Greensters!

Garuda Wastu Lestari Waste Bank
It’s Sharon and I want to share my experience with you guys.

Recently, some Green Team members and I went to the Waste bank. Its name is "Garuda Wastu Lestari" which is located in Ahmad Yani street in Denpasar, Bali - Indonesia. For your information, 'waste bank' (or Bank Sampah in Indonesian language) is a place that collects our wastes that have been sorted out. The waste bank then will distribute them to handycraft persons or plastic manufacturers or other manufacturers according to their products. The waste bank is managed by some environmental volunteers and is using a system like a banking system. You deposit and 'save' your own garbage instead of money to this waste bank and you will get a saving account. It's cool! You change your trash into a cash.

So, we stored our waste which were papers and at first I did not expect to collect so much waste from our house. The waste we gave them will then be converted into money, we can either receive it through cash or we can store our money in an account book (FYI the book is made up of recycled papers).

Weighing our trashes
I found out that they didn’t only receive papers, they receive other types of waste too. We were invited to their warehouse which was full of waste that was stored in big white bags. They had the wastes sorted out by the types. While I was strolling around the warehouse, I found out that they received plastic bottles, sachets, plastic cups and even damaged electronic appliances too but they won’t be receiving batteries because batteries are considered as residues. Other companies will take care of those residues.
Products from wastes

They had an office where they store their already finished made products. They made school bags, tote bags and umbrellas that were mainly made out of sachets, they also had dresses that were made out of plastic bags, we also saw several bags that are made out of the lip of plastic cups that were very durable for carrying shopping items. The waste they collected will then be sent to a manufacturing company is Java then the finished products will be sent back to them again, they also provide you an app that can be installed by android called ‘BANK SAMPAH’ to check your bank account, not to mention they also have a member card.

Our trash saving account book
It was such a new experience for me as I had no idea that we could get money in exchange for trash. Not only that we would be able to partake in saving the environment, we are also able to save money to be used for a greater cause, for Green Team Indonesia personally, we are thinking of using it for our bio-soap.

(to be continued in next article)

Best Regards,
