Elephant's Poo Paper from Bali Safari & Marine Park!

An attractive booth at the Lebih Beach Festival
Hey, Greensters!!

Patricia here :)

Today, I went to Pantai Lebih (Lebih Beach) around Gianyar area (Bali) because I joined a photo contest there. So, as always, there were lots of booths there. One of them was a booth from a famous zoo in Bali called BALI SAFARI & MARINE PARK

So, I was amazed with what they were showing there. They made recycled papers out of, well of course, paper and……. Elephant's dung. Yup, Elephant's poo!!! No, it doesn't look weird or smell bad. It is actually like normal recycled paper, but with grass fiber in it that makes the paper looks more artistic.
Cycle of Green Conservation

Why do they have grass fiber? Because they don't use the whole Elephant dump, they clean it first and leave it to dry till only the grass fiber is left. Elephants eats grass, thats where the grass fiber came from. This amazed me because Ms. Wendy Husband, the founder of this new way of recycling paper is so creative! She used something that is useless to everyone and made it become something useful.

Molding the paper porridge

There were two people who took care of the booth. Their names were Mr. Juliarta and Mr. Agus. They were very informative and helpful. They even let me try to make one of the recycled papers myself! They told me how to make it and they also demonstrated it. When I have done with making my own-poo-paper, they gave me a 'Bale  Agung' fan, cute giraffe stickers, and the most interesting: A bookmark made of poo paper!
After the elephant's dung was dried

This is how to make the poo paper according to Mr. Juliarta and Mr. Agus
  • First, soak the papers that is used to make the poo paper for two hours.
  • Dry it and then blend it with a blender. Put it aside.
  • Boil the Elephant's poo till its boiled and then dry it for two days so that only the grass fiber is left.

The Elephant Poo Paper: Awesome!
  • Then mix with the paper and water till it becomes paper porridge.
  • Add some starch or tapioca flour as a 'glue'.
  • You have to use a special mold to mold the paper porridge. Mould it then dry it for two days.
  • You can use the paper for crafts, writing, creative arts ... anything! Just be creative and use your imagination. :)
That's how to make 'Elephant's Poo Paper'.

What I learn today make me realize that 'never underestimate anything that you think it's only a rubbish. You still can create something new and interesting from even a dung! Earth already provides everything for us. We just need to appreciate it more'.

Signing the Guest Book

For Ms. Wendy Husband and Bali Safari & Marine Park: two thumbs up! Thank you for doing something good for our beloved Earth! :)

Thank you for reading :)

Best regards,
Patricia xx
