Surfer Girl & Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara: Orang Utan (part 2)

Photo session in Kuta Beach after the event
Hey Greensters!

Patricia here :) This is the second part of the previous article about the coral reefs. As mentioned earlier, we went to an event held by Surfer Girl and The Nature Conservancy (TNC). In Indonesia, TNC comes with the name of Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN). They talked about small things we can do to help them to protect endangered animals around us.

So, after miss Sutra Anjani  from YKAN talked about coral reefs, they told us that they worked to protect orang utans (scientific name: Pongo). They told us that orang utans are very sensitive. Their real habitat is in Kalimantan and Sumatra of Indonesia.

Many unique facts about Orang Utan. Orang utan’s DNA structure is almost the same of humans. 97% the same to be exact. Orang utans are mammals. They are threatened by wood choppers, hunters, forest fires and humans switch the functions of forests. Forests now are used for farming palm trees or rubber trees. This actions can take Orang Utan out of their own habitats. YKAN Foundation also has an office in Berau (East Kalimantan) to manage Orang utan's habibats so that they are not extinct.

The current population of Orang Utans are in the range of 40,000 - 50,000 animals in Kalimantan and Sumatra. Only research shows this. The rest are in Malaysia, while 80% of populations are in Indonesia. There’s only 2 countries that has Orang Utans: Indonesia and Malaysia. Orang utans breast feed their babies until they are 6 years old then they separate from their mom and find their own house at 16 years old. Their favorite food is Durian. There is a certain kind of Durian named Durian Lai. This durian can be found in Berau (East Kalimantan). It has an orange color in the inside. Orang utans loves to it this durian.
