A Visit to SOSRO TEA-BOTTLING FACTORY!

Hi Greensters!
It's a 4 hectare factory in Gianyar Bali

I'm Chloe from the Green Team Indonesia.

On the 1st of July 2013, we went to 'Pabrik Teh Botol Sosro' which is in Gianyar - Bali. This is a very famous brand of ready-to-drink tea packaged in bottles. The Green Team Indonesia has a great chance to visit its factory and see directly how the process of bottling the tea.

25 children and 17 parents joined the visit
At 9 o'clock, there was a short presentation about Teh Botol Sosro that was founded on 17th of July 1974 by Sosrodjojo family in Slawi (Central Java), the history of tea and the history of Teh Botol Sosro. They said that Teh Botol Sosro is made with REAL tea, sugar and they said that they didn't put any preservative, artificial color or artificial sugar.

Miss Dina explained about the history of tea. Tea was first found in China by Shen Nung. He found the tea in 2737 BC. Tea was first known to the world through Silk Route. There are still many legends on how the tea was found. But, the first well-known is Shen Nung himself.
Left: the ingredients of Teh Botol Sosro
Right: the varieties of tea (white tea, black tea, green tea)

There are many kinds of tea: jasmine tea, white tea, green tea, black tea, Oolong tea and much more! They said that tea can be used for moisturizing your skin, avoid cancer, avoid high blood and make your teeth even stronger. The most expensive tea is white tea that comes from the first buds which are not bloomed yet. The price is around 4 million rupiahs or around 400 US dollars per kilograms.

The ready-to-drink tea from Teh Botol Sosro is very well managed and produced. It has to follow many processes and procedures to keep the tea clean, sterilized and healthy to drink. On the way to the factory, we saw bottles that have been cleaned with hot water. When they clean the bottles, it was really dirty! The bottles must go to the process of 'bottle washer' process manually and mechanically. Before, the empty bottles must go the process of 'dirty bottle checking'. There is a Quality Control laboratory as well to test the tea productions of the day before they are being marketed.

15 minutes cartoon movie titled 'Si Daun' (the leaf)
to show the process of bottling the Teh Botol Sosro

We also saw 'the kitchen' where they boil the tea. There are 4 big tanks with the capacity of 11,000 liters that can produce 30,000 bottles in one hour! That's a lot of tea in one hour! Then we saw the filler process when the tea liquid to be filled in a sterilized bottle. The temperature of the bottle must be 60 degrees Celcius when the temperature of the tea is 80 degrees Celcius. The final process is called 'palletizer'. It is when the tea in bottles must be stored in the warehouse for 3 days incubation while waiting for the quality control laboratory and the temperature of the bottles are in room temperature.

After seeing the process, we went to 'waste water treatment plant' that is managed very well. Teh Botol Sosro really cares about the environment. The dirty water waste is to be processed many times so that it can be used again for mopping the floor, watering the Albasia tree farm behind the factory, washing the crates, bottles and fish ponds. The metal wastes from bottle caps are sent to metal factory to recycle. The plastic straws are sent to plastic factory to recycle. The broken pieces of the bottles are sent to glass factory for recycle. There are around 10,000 freshwater fishes in the ponds for indicators.

It was a great time seeing the factory with the Green Team Indonesia! The education was very helpful for us. And remember, Sosro has no preservatives, artificial colors and artificial sugar. Almost forgot, did u know that Camelia Sinensis is another name for tea in Latin. So if you have a friend named 'Camellia', don't call her 'tea'. Hahaha ... just kidding :)

Big THANKS to TEH BOTOL SOSRO, Miss Dian Ekayanti and Miss I Luh Suartini as the marketing supports for welcoming us!

Thank you for reading!

Regards,

Chloe
