Hi Greensters!!

My name is Jeffry and this is my first article!! 1st of all I'm gonna tell you a little bit about me. I live in Denpasar, Bali. I was born in Surabaya at the 7th December of 2000, and I am a grade 10 science student at Tunas Daud School. My hobbies include singing, drawing, gardening, cooking, and baking, my favorite subjects are English, Art, Biology, and Literature.

So, today I'm gonna talk about Wildlife. Now, what is Wildlife? Well, according to Google, Wildlife traditionally refers to undomesticated animal species, but has come to include all plants, fungi, and other organisms that grow or live wild in an area without being introduced by humans. Wildlife can be found in all ecosystems. Deserts, forests, rain forests, plains, grasslands, and even the most developed cities, and all ecosystems have distinct forms of Wildlife.

As a lot of you may know, our number of wildlife is decreasing every single day, why? Well, because, us humans have been so selfish and taking away their homes and family by cutting down forests, trophy hunting, overfishing, etc. Mike Barratt, director of science and policy at WWF said, "We have lost one half of the animal population and knowing this is driven by human consumption, this is clearly a call to arms and we must act now."

So, what makes Wildlife so important?? Well, without it there we wouldn't have existed. Why?? Because, without Wildlife we would have no food, oxygen, and everything we need to survive. The oxygen we breathe is made by plants by photosynthesis, meat like fish, beef, and poultry comes from animals, the vegetables and fruits are from plants, without insects like butterflies, bees, and etc we wouldn't have fruits because, sometimes, plants need these insects to help them with pollination. So, try to imagine the world without wildlife. Scary, isn't it? Without Wildlife, the whole world would collapse. If we were to take away a species out from an ecosystem, it would make the whole ecosystem collapse.

For example, When Yellowstone National Park in the USA was created in 1872, gray wolves (Canis lupus) populations were already in decline in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. The creation of the national park did not provide protection for wolves or other predators, and government predator control programs in the first decades of the 1900s essentially helped eliminate the gray wolf from Yellowstone.

Once they were gone, elk populations began to rise. Over the next few years conditions of Yellowstone National Park declined drastically. At around 1926 to 1995, the wolves were absent in the park. By this time many biologists were worried about eroding land and plants dying off. Deciduous, woody species such as aspen and cottonwood suffered from overgrazing. The park service started trapping and moving the elk, and when that was not effective, they kill them. Elk population control methods continued for more than 30 years. Elk control prevented further degradation of the range, but didn't improve its overall condition. In the late 1960s, local hunters began to complain to their congressmen that there were too few elk, and the congressmen threatened to stop funding Yellowstone. Killing elk was given up as control method which allowed elk populations to again rise. As elk populations rose, the quality of the range declined, affecting many other animals. Without wolves, coyote populations increased dramatically which adversely impacted the pronghorn antelope population. However, it was the overly large elk populations that caused the most profound changes to the ecosystem of Yellowstone with the absence of wolves. At around 1995 wolves started to be reintroduced into the park and ever since their comeback elk populations were controlled, the woody species of plants such as aspen and cottonwood were coming back and the park was starting to get better.

One of the things that we could do to prevent our wildlife from decreasing is to stop using animal products such as leather, horns, antlers, etc. Because those leather, horns, antlers, and tusks are from wild endangered animals like elephants, whales, deer, tigers and a whole lot of other animals.

And another way, is to not litter in biodegradable trash such as plastic on the streets and everywhere else, because, if we were to throw away all that trash on the roads, not only will the road be dirty, but the trash will end up in the sewers and then the rivers which will leads the trash to the seas and oceans. Plastic bags are dangerous for a lot of aquatic animals, such as turtles and sunfish or mola-mola. Because, turtles and mola-mola eats jellyfish and since plastic bag kind of looks like jellyfish, they might try to eat it, choke, and they'll die. So, please don't litter anywhere, for most of the times it will end up in the sea and hurt our sealife.

Another way, is to start a garden with a good ecosystem, plants that are indigenous to your area, trees, birdhouses, butterfly feeders, and preferably a pond. Because, by doing so you are helping some species of local species of birds, insects and other animals find food and shelter, and it is also very beautiful.

Here is a list of some of the endangered wildlife species..
ANIMALS:
Blue-throated macaw
Mola-mola/ Sun/ Moonfish
Siamese crocodile
Malayan tiger
Kemp's ridley sea turtle
Hawksbill turtle
Javan rhino
Vaquita
Blue whale
Giant panda

PLANTS:
Rafflesia arnoldi
Western prairie fringed orchid
Georgia aster
Wiggin's acalypha
Texas wild rice
Howell's spectacular thelypody
Arizona agave
Enrubio
Ouachita mountain goldenrod
Stenogyne kaneohana

And the list just goes on and on and on and on. So, please.. people, nature needs our help. There have been too many species of animals and plants that are endangered, and it's mostly our fault.

I can't imagine how the world would be without wildlife. Without plants, and without animals, we would have no food and a lot of people will loose their jobs. So, please, help nature.

If someone from the government is reading this article, please do something to help, we can't do this alone.

So I guess that's it. I had so much fun writing this article!! Thank you for reading this article and have a great day!!

It's me ... Kezia.

On June,1st 2016, I went to Sanglah Hospital. I went to the Hospital with my mom, my mom’s friends and my friends from Green Team Indonesia. We visited children who have cancers in there. We gave many things to them, such as dolls, snacks, money, and some crafts.

I made the craft for them. My mom helped me. We call it 'eco-craft' because the materials we use to make the craft are from the things we didn’t use anymore. We made a pencil case out of toilet paper rolls, fabric and beads. My mom and I also decorated the envelopes we used for putting some money inside for the children.

When we were wrapping the dolls

I gave my dolls to them too. We wanted to do some crafting together with the children, but the nurse said we can’t because they had to rest and they just went into some medications. So, we just went from one ward to another ward to gave them the snacks, money and dolls.

The doctor said the dolls must be clean and must be wrapped with plastics so that the dolls are not dusty. Dust is dangerous for the children with cancers because it can trigger some disease to them. The nurses then kept the dolls in the playroom for a while.

There are 28 children. They are suffering from cancer such as leukemia (blood cancer), bone cancer or retinoblastoma (eye cancer). They come from unfortunate families from villages around Bali island.

I felt happy because I can meet the children and gave them snacks, dolls, and money. I met them one by one and gave away the things we brought.

When we visited them, even when they sick, they felt happy too.

Then, on July 4th 2016, we're back to Sanglah hospital to wrap the dolls in the playing room. We also wanted to give away a package of lunch box, mineral water and orange to the parents who accompany their children during the medications. We were focusing on the children all the time since 2012 and we never paid attention to the parents. They must be very tired, sad and need to eat. We decided to arrange the lunch boxes for the parents. It turned out really fun to see them happy.

The Tree of Hope

We were surprised when we saw a 'tree of hope' in the playroom. The children wrote what they want or their prayers on a piece of paper and put on the 'tree of hope'. All of them were full of hopes to be healed from the disease they have. We do pray that all their prayers come true.

The playroom also has a small library or a reading corner. From the notes, we found out that the children love to read also. So, we will manage to bring more books for them one day.

We share with love.
We should keep sharing to others for a better generations.

Note: As our respect to the children with cancer, we don't post the photos of us with them. Thank you.

Best Regards,

Dear Greensters,

It's Sharon again! This is the part 2 of my previous article.

I will be sharing some green tips for you guys and hopefully these tips I’m giving will be helpful for you guys later in the future. My first tip is to find a waste bank near your area, they aren’t very branched out yet but I’m quite sure you will find a small one near, don’t give up! Or you can create your own Waste Bank with a support from a big company in your city or your country. These waste banks here in Indonesia are mostly supported by Unilever company. Thank you to Unilever for such a great support for our environment.

Waste banks just need more recognition, they just stay hidden in places you don’t expect them to be. Personally I never knew waste bank existed until Green Team Indonesia told us about a new founding that they found, waste bank.

Ni Wayan Riawati and I Made Warsa

We went to another waste bank named Saranagathi Waste Bank in another side of Ahmad Yani stree, Denpasar - Bali, Indonesia. In this waste bank, we met with the manager Mr. I Made Warsa and the educator Miss Ni Wayan Riawati who were so helpful and very informative.

Wefie together

My second tip is to not only collect papers from your house only, ask your friends or relatives that lives nearby, if your parents work in a office you can ask them spare papers they do not use anymore. Usually, at the end of the year my mom would hand me boxes of waste paper and will ask me to rip it apart and throw it away because it was no use anymore, just if we knew that waste bank existed we wouldn’t throw out those precious papers!

My third tip is finding the right timing, papers used to lie around my room unorganized, but after I gave out the papers to the waste bank, my room felt much more cleaner now, because this is school break, this is the perfect chance to go to the waste bank and store out your papers to them because you must have collected many past exam papers or worksheets from school.

Garuda Wastu Lestari Waste Bank

It’s Sharon and I want to share my experience with you guys.

Recently, some Green Team members and I went to the Waste bank. Its name is "Garuda Wastu Lestari" which is located in Ahmad Yani street in Denpasar, Bali - Indonesia. For your information, 'waste bank' (or Bank Sampah in Indonesian language) is a place that collects our wastes that have been sorted out. The waste bank then will distribute them to handycraft persons or plastic manufacturers or other manufacturers according to their products. The waste bank is managed by some environmental volunteers and is using a system like a banking system. You deposit and 'save' your own garbage instead of money to this waste bank and you will get a saving account. It's cool! You change your trash into a cash.

So, we stored our waste which were papers and at first I did not expect to collect so much waste from our house. The waste we gave them will then be converted into money, we can either receive it through cash or we can store our money in an account book (FYI the book is made up of recycled papers).

Weighing our trashes

I found out that they didn’t only receive papers, they receive other types of waste too. We were invited to their warehouse which was full of waste that was stored in big white bags. They had the wastes sorted out by the types. While I was strolling around the warehouse, I found out that they received plastic bottles, sachets, plastic cups and even damaged electronic appliances too but they won’t be receiving batteries because batteries are considered as residues. Other companies will take care of those residues.

They had an office where they store their already finished made products. They made school bags, tote bags and umbrellas that were mainly made out of sachets, they also had dresses that were made out of plastic bags, we also saw several bags that are made out of the lip of plastic cups that were very durable for carrying shopping items. The waste they collected will then be sent to a manufacturing company is Java then the finished products will be sent back to them again, they also provide you an app that can be installed by android called ‘BANK SAMPAH’ to check your bank account, not to mention they also have a member card.

October 2015, we went on our annual Camping and Hiking trip, along with a new

camping trip, making it our biggest camping trip ever. As usual, it lasted for
two days and one night. Through this camping trip, we learnt how to take care
of our environment while having fun. We sang around the bonfire and laid down
underneath the stars. We talked about life, it was pretty deep haha.
completely lost track of time. As dawn came, we realized that we hadn<span style="font-family: "arial unicode ms" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family: Helvetica;">’t
slept at all. We were too busy laughing and talking nonsense all night. We
didn't even sleep inside the tent at all! We just somehow decided to sleep
outside, underneath the shining stars.
When the sun rose, we made hot chocolate and coffee for each

When we reached the forest and during our hike up to the forest,
we collected the trash that was left behind by the previous visitors. The
result was terrible. There were 5 big sacs full of trash that we have
collected. It is our duty to keep the forest clean because if it is dirty, it
would be prone to be bought by big companies that would take it down to use for
the company<span style="font-family: "arial unicode ms" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family: Helvetica;">’s industries.

We have only started this Forest Clean Up and we are looking forward
to our next forest clean up. Visitors often throw their trash in the forest
grounds because there are no trash cans there and they feel inconvenient with
holding on to their trash. So it is our duty to make a difference and change
that. We must take care of our forests as it is the source to plenty of our
resources and it is home to a diverse range of floras and faunas.

Tips for you who like to go camping and hiking:

I bet most of you have known about this: "bring your own trash!". It means that if you don't find any trash bins or garbage cans around you, then just brin your own trash with you till you finally find a place to throw it away.

Minimize your trash. It means that you can use reusable things during your camping. Bring your own bottle that you can refill, for example.

Always respect Mother Nature by providing garbage bins around the camping area.

Don't leave your trash on the area when you leave.

Do good for Mother Nature by arranging a Forest Clean Up. What you need to have are only gloves and some sacks to bring the trashes you will find when you hike or camp.

Dear Greensters,

Patricia here! :)

I am attaching a video about our visit to Yayasan Lengis Hijau, a place in Denpasar - Bali to recycle used cooking oil into biodiesel. In this video, Mr. Tri Hermawan said that you should not throw away the used cooking oil,but it is better you collect and give it to the biodiesel producer like what we did.

In Indonesia, there are only 3 cities that have a place to recycle used cooking oil into biodiesel, such as: Jakarta, Surabaya and Denpasar. If it is difficult to find one in your city, please read my previous article for alternative ways to "recycle" your used cooking oil. This is my previous article (just click the following to go directly to the article): Recycling Used Cooking Oil with Yayasan Lengis Hijau (part 1).

In Indonesia, there are some illegal places to recycle used cooking oil and transform it into another "new" cooking oil. Then they sell it in the local market without a brand name. We call it here as "minyak goreng curah" (bulk cooking oil). This is very dangerous. But, we don't have power to stop this illegal thing. What we can do is to buy only cooking oil with a brand name. Don't buy cooking oil WITHOUT a brand name.

So, let's save our planet by doing small things in your home. Don't repeat the use of cooking oil more than 3 times. Collect the used cooking oil in your home and do something to recycle it.

Let's Love Our Earth!

Thank you.

Mr. Tri Hermawan (Production Manager) greeted us there. We had a very interesting chat and we got more knowledge that we would like to share with you. Here it is:

There are different types of cooking oil, such as palm oil (in Indonesian language: 'minyak kelapa sawit) and coconut oil (in Indonesian language: 'minyak kelapa'). Palm oil is best used for frying, not for sauteing while coconut oil is best used when you saute the food. Why? Because palm oil has undergone a long chemical process. Although, it is better to make your own coconut oil by frying shredded coconut because if it comes from a factory, it means that it has also been processed with chemicals.

Mr. Tri suggested that we should be back to any kind of natural food. He gave examples such as soybeans. We should choose the yellowish local soybeans. Don't buy a bigger-size soybean that is imported from other countries. In America, a bigger-size soybean is categorized as transgenic and usually it is used for biodiesel as well as corns. Mr. Tri also gave examples to choose brown sugars rather than white sugar. Because brown sugar is more natural and it is heated for only few minutes while white sugar has undergone a long chemical process.

Tips of "When there's no place to recycle used cooking oil"

As you all know, water and oil does not mix. Which is why we should not pour our used cooking oil down the drain or in rivers because this could destroy the environment and cleaning it up would be hard. If your country or city does not have a place that collects used cooking oil to turn it into biodiesel, then getting rid of your used cooking oil would be hard. The only thing you can do is to limit the use of cooking oil to cook your food. Alternative ways are to bake or steam your food. But if you still utilize cooking oil and it really needs to be thrown away, pour the cooking oil over organic trash because cooking oil is made of organic materials. The used cooking oil could still be decomposed by the bacteria in the soil even though the process takes a long time. If it is only a small amount of used cooking oil, you can also throw it into the soil because the soil can decompose it.

You can also make your own compost for your plants using this used cooking oil. How?

Provide a container for making your compost. You can use a metal barrel or keg or a medium size plastic container with a lid.

Collect organic trash, such as leftovers, dry leaves, eggshells etc. Put them inside the container.

Pour the used cooking oil over the pile of the organic trash. Add some water.

Stir and flip over the pile once in a while. Cover the container with the lid.

The compost will be ready in a month. How will you know it? It will produce heat. It means the reaction occurs. If you stir and flip over the pile and it is getting cooler, then the compost is ready for your plants.

Besides biodiesel, used cooking oil can be recycled into many other things, such as composts, soap, glycerin, biogas, bioethanol, animal feeds and many more.

Dear Greensters,

Hi! It's Vanessa again! So, this is the last part of the stories about my hedgehogs. As I told you earlier, I have 8 hedgehogs. I name them as Hedgy Spice, Norman, Rambutan, Durian, Squishey Paws, Paul, Nala, and Spikey.

Hedgehogs have a unique habit. They like to spit on themselves. It is called 'self-anointing'. They will twist their body, then form a foamy saliva and they spread it on their body. There is no Scientific explanation yet about this habit. But, what I heard is that they do that when they feel strange with a new smell. If they do it regularly, then it might mean they need a bath. Some people also said that this self-anointing habit is a kind of scent camouflage in order to cover their own scent in a new environment. Even baby hedgehogs can do this habit since their early age.

This is all for today. So, whatever your pets are, always take care of them with L-O-V-E. Having pets need a big commitment. Please consider them as your family member and you will never neglect them a day.

It’s me Vanessa. It has been a while since I write anything, but anyways I'm back! Today I'm going to talk about how to take care of hedgehogs as pets. I have 8 hedgehogs, 2 parents and 6 kids. Now I'm going to tell you guys how to take care of hedgehogs. let’s start!

Some facts and how-to's about Hedgehogs:

1. Hedgehogs are nocturnal.

Nocturnal means they sleep in the morning and afternoon, but they are active at nigh

2. You have to make them know your scent.

A one-year old Hedgy Spice

Hedgehogs cannot see clearly. They have poor eyesight. But they have a great sense of smell and hearing. So, in order for them to know you, everyday you play with them until it knows you. If not, then they will hurt you with their 5,000 spines!

3. How to know if the hedgehog knows your smell.

When you touch it and it curls to a ball, shivers, and makes hissing noises, then it means it doesn't know you yet. It takes 2 weeks until it knows your smell and familiar with it.

4. Always change the shredded wood in the cage.
Always change the shredded wood in the cage once or twice in a week. It would be much better if you can clean its cage regularly by picking up its poops and wet shredded woods because it pees. Wear a washable rubber glove to do this or wrap your hand with a plastic bag but this means you will throw away the plastic bag or else you have to wash it also. I clean the cage twice everyday in the morning and at night. Everytime you change the shredded wood in the cage, you have to wash the cage also.

5. According to animal facts I read, there are 17 different species of Hedgehogs. My hedgehogs are "Salt and Pepper" and "Brown" varieties. And they are categorized as African Pygmy Hedgehogs. Hedgehogs have reproductive cycle to gestation for only 35 days. They are ready to get married when they are 6 months old (but, mine was still so young that time and we didn't know it yet!).

6. How to take care of them

Put clean shredded wood in the cage.

Put
a box in the cage. Make sure the hedgehog can
get in and out! You can use the used tetra pack boxes to make this. The box is for sleeping and hiding (they need a dark place
to sleep).

Use a heavy bowl to put the food. Make sure they can reach it! I use a glass ashtray for this.

They
eat cat food, but the size should be small so they can eat it.

Don’t
give too much food or else you overfeed them and they can die. They eat at night when they are awake. So, only feed them once a day at night.

Use
a hamster bottle and hang it at the side of the cage. Make sure they can reach it!

They
drink normal water. Make sure they always have enough water in the bottle.

Plowing the paddies field

Long time no see. It’s been a while since I wrote an article. This is Shirley by the way. So I wanted to talked about my experience going the the paddy field to plant rice and plow it too.

Recently, I went to a camp in Klaten, Central Java, Indonesia. There, I did lots of different kinds of activities and one of them was going into the paddy field. So after we went trekking, we went to the paddy field. As soon as I went in, I felt like that I was stepping on poo (*sorry to say that *). It felt really mushy and I had to be careful in order not to fall into it.

I started by planting rice, it was actually quite easy since that I already experienced planting rice a few years back in Bali. But, I’ve never tried plowing the field. The only thing that we had to do was to sit on a wood and control the way which the cow is going to. The area that I was going to sit in was quite small so there was a slight chance that I was going to fall into the water. I had to sit in a certain position so that my back didn’t hurt. But overall it was a pretty nice experience though I was reluctant to do it at first.

Rice is the major source of food for most people in Indonesia, as well as Asian countries. The plants need plenty of water and sunlight. The island I live (Bali island) is famous with Subak irrigation system in its paddy fields. Indonesia has many rain falls. So, the paddy fields can be harvested 3 to 4 times in a year. The scientific name for rice is Oryza Sativa or Asian rice.

So, let's go green and preserve paddies fields. We don't want to be unable to find any paddies fields in the next 20 years, do we?

Thanks for reading.

Best Regards,

Hey Greensters!

Patricia here :)

A few days ago when I was in an event with Surfergirl and Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara, I held a workshop with them and also with Bintang Felinia (Surfer Girl's Green Ambassador for the years 2014-2015. I made a terrarium while Bintang made recycled paper.

Now what is a terrarium? Terrarium is the art of planting in a transparent plastic or glass container. This art of planting was first introduced to us humans by Nathaniel Bashaw Ward in his book called ‘On the Growth of Plants in Closely Glazed Cases’ that was published in the year 1842.

Patricia made a terrarium

TERRARIUM

Ingredients:
1 transparent plastic or glass container
1 cactus (or any other plants that don't need that much sunlight)
Coloured pebbles for decoration
Charcoal, mash it roughly
Medium sized gravel
Fertile soil

Tools needed:
1 gardening shovel

How to make it:

Prepare the cactus that you will plant in the terrarium. Clean it well from the excess soil.

Place the gravel in the container as the base for your terrarium. It is important for you to put the gravel in it because it is used to store excess water.

Simple terrarium

On top of the gravel, place some charcoal. It is used to absorb poison that is given out by withering plants so that it would keep the plant healthy and your terrarium clean.

Above the charcoal, you can layer it with coloured stones to make your terrarium look pretty and attractive.Above that, add a little bit of soil first, then plant the cactus that has already been cleaned in step one and then you add more soil until it is half the height of the container.

Decorate the terrarium with the coloured stones or with sand as you like to make it look pretty.

Your terrarium is now ready to be placed in your room or anywhere in your house (or sell it).

Easy right? Just remember, use a plant that doesn't need that much sunlight such as cactus, aloe vera, sirih gading (English: Devil's Ivy), small palms and lots more. It’s good to put it out in the sun once a week if you want your plant to look super fresh and healthy. Once a week, spray your terrarium on its edges with water so that your plant can get enough nutrition for it to grow. Don't over water it though because that could cause your plant to wither and die. If your home has an air conditioner in it, make sure you water your terrarium more often because the coldness can dry out your plant.
Hey Greensters!

Patricia here :) This is the second part of the previous article about the coral reefs. As mentioned earlier, we went to an event held by Surfer Girl and The Nature Conservancy (TNC). In Indonesia, TNC comes with the name of Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN). They talked about small things we can do to help them to protect endangered animals around us.

So, after miss Sutra Anjani from YKAN talked about coral reefs, they told us that they worked to protect orang utans (scientific name: Pongo). They told us that orang utans are very sensitive. Their real habitat is in Kalimantan and Sumatra of Indonesia.

Many unique facts about Orang Utan. Orang utan’s DNA structure is almost the same of humans. 97% the same to be exact. Orang utans are mammals. They are threatened by wood choppers, hunters, forest fires and humans switch the functions of forests. Forests now are used for farming palm trees or rubber trees. This actions can take Orang Utan out of their own habitats. YKAN Foundation also has an office in Berau (East Kalimantan) to manage Orang utan's habibats so that they are not extinct.

The current population of Orang Utans are in the range of 40,000 - 50,000 animals in Kalimantan and Sumatra. Only research shows this. The rest are in Malaysia, while 80% of populations are in Indonesia. There’s only 2 countries that has Orang Utans: Indonesia and Malaysia. Orang utans breast feed their babies until they are 6 years old then they separate from their mom and find their own house at 16 years old. Their favorite food is Durian. There is a certain kind of Durian named Durian Lai. This durian can be found in Berau (East Kalimantan). It has an orange color in the inside. Orang utans loves to it this durian.

Hey Greensters!

Patricia here :) Today, I’ll be talking about my day with Surfer Girl. As we all know, Surfer Girl is a lifestyle brand for young women. It has core values of Love, Nature, Friends and Fun. It's an honor for me to be the Surfer Girl's Green Ambassador for 2012 - 2014. Thank you, Surfer Girl.

On June 26th, 2015 we went to a Surfer Girl event. This was one of the campaigns held by Surfer Girl and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to protect endangered animals, such as Orang Utan, Anoa, Slow Loris, elephant, Sumatran Tiger, Javan Rhino, Shark, hornbill, Cendrawasih bird and some more. The event took place at Kuta beach. Oh by the way, TNC in Indonesia comes with the name of Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN).

Mr. Jaka Setia and Miss Sutra Anjani from TNC

After half-an-hour of beach clean up (we found so many cigarette stubs and of course: plastics!!!), Mr. Jaka Setia from YKAN explained about the foundation. So, YKAN is a foundation that conserves nature. They have been here since 25 years ago. They’re based in America. They first came to the centre of Sulawesi then came to Bali, Komodo Island, Nusa Penida, Derawan island, Wakatobi and Raja Ampat.

By the way, Mr. Jaka explained a bit about Nusa Penida. This is a small island close to Bali island. The unique thing about this island that no other islands have is that there is a typical endemic animal around the island named Mola-Mola. Its English name is Ocean Sunfish. Don't be surprised because this fish has 5 meters in diameter and categorized as the heaviest known body fish in the world (it can exceed 1,000 kilograms!).

Then, we had a talking session with their marine biologist named Ms. Sutra Anjani. She talked about coral reefs and the different animals living there. The coral reef is a habitat to a lot of marine animals which makes them very important. Coral reef is an animal itself which gives another reason to why it is important. It is a community where lots of marine organisms gather. There are algae, fish, crabs and many more. You only can find corals where the water is shallow because it needs sunlight to grow.

Beach-clean-up with Surfer Girl teams

Corals are found only in tropical places or in seas where the temperature is warm. There are lots of animals who have a relationship with these corals such as the Mola-Mola fish. The Mola-Mola fish migrates to the coral reef area and the small marine animals that live in the corals will clean off the parasites that sticks on the Mola-Mola’s skin. They have to get rid of the parasites because parasites aren't good for them. If there’s too much parasites, the fish will get sick. Manta rays also comes to the coral reef to get ‘cleaned up’. Other animals that live in the coral reefs are turtles because they find food there. Marine mammals also come here (for example: the manatee).

Corals affect on us and for its surroundings are to filter out the dirty water such as the acid from farmer’s fertilisers. Corals will filter the water so that it is much healthier for the marine animals to live in. Healthier water, more fish will live there. Corals can act as a shield to the coastal area shores from being damaged by breaking the big waves.

Corals can be damaged by getting hit by big waves, fish bombs, plastics and many more. Plactics can give out chemicals when decomposing in the sea and can pollute the water. Plastics can also prevent corals from getting sunlight which makes it die easily. Plastics are also dangerous to marine animals such as the Mola-Mola because the Mola-Mola eats jellyfish and what else looks like a jellyfish? That’s right: P-L-A-S-T-I-C! The Mola-Mola fish will think that these plastics are jellyfish and will feed on them and choke.

Corals are also mined for decorations and also to get fish. Fishermen nowadays still use fish bombing which damages the corals. They poison the fish with potassium so that the fish will faint and will be easy to grab but this is bad for us humans because we eat these fishes which means we are eating the poison.
Did you guys know that Manta Rays are actually not that dangerous? This plankton eater is still a wild animal who though so you should still be careful when you see one. Around its body, there’s slime that coats its outer body and prevents bacteria from damaging its health. If these slimes are gone, even just a part, this will make the manta rays get infections easily. So don't touch them!
He invited us to his father’s museum in which he has inherited. This Museum was built by Don Antonio Blanco himself. Don Antonio Blanco was a Spanish painter who was born in the Philippines and was an American Citizen. He first came to Bali long ago in search of Paradise. Back then, Singaraja was our capital city. He met the deputy governor who brought him to Ubud.
Any type of art you could think of was there. You could find traditional dances, beautiful paintings and many more in Ubud. The king of Ubud was very interested in Don Antonio Blanco. He was a Hollywood actor, a painter and a magician. He was then gifted with 2 hectares of land by the King of Ubud where he built his first house. From then on, he lived in Ubud and found his other half, Ni Ronji.
Back then, ladies in Bali were bare chested, which meant that they were only covered till just below their breasts. Don Antonio Blanco wanted to preserve the culture of Bali. People who visit the museum now a days get rather negative once they see these paintings even before their guide explains the real meaning behind each painting, which is a shame really. Don Antonio Blanco never meant for these paintings to be some sort of pervertedness. He wanted to show the world the different cultures we have here and that you cannot find it anywhere else.
Back to last week, once we got to the museum, Mr. Mario Blanco greeted us warmly. He told us about the different kind of birds they take care of there. Mr. Mario Blanco owns 205 ‘Jalak Bali’ or more known as the Bali Starling. He told one of his staff to take us around so that we could see the Bali Starling. Their eggs takes 14 days to hatch and after 7 days, they take them and put them in the incubator. After about 40 days. they keep them in a small cage. 4 months later, they’re moved into a big cage.
Mr. Mario Blanco has a breeding permit and a distribution license in our country so he owns them legally. If you want to have a Bali Starling, all you need to have is a cage and the ability to take care of it because the Bali Starling is already very very endangered and is super close to extinction. You need to have a hobby of being with these birds and take care of them with passion. The cage is easy to get, or if you cannot get it, you can make it. The cage is made of plywood in the size 25x25x30. Young coconut leaf (called Janur in Bali) is cut and the birds will make their own nests out of it.
It’s really easy to differentiate the male Bali starling from the female ones. The male’s crest is longer than the female ones. This Bali Starling in the museum was taken from Solo, Java island. Most of them are in Negara, Bali and some are kept in the Taman Nasional Bali Barat (West Bali National Park). For now, we don't know yet how long a Bali Starling can live up to but so far, one of the Bali Starling in the museum is 16 years old. How can you spot a Bali Starling? That’s easy! They have blue eyes and white feathers. They eat chicken feed and crickets, easy to find.
After the Bali Starlings, we saw other birds such as peacocks, hornbills and chickens and many more. You could even take pictures with parrots and hornbills. Then, they took us to see the museum. At the entrance to the museum, there are two huge dragon statues at each sides of the stairs. These dragon statues represent guards to the museum. It is a Balinese, Chinese, Spanish, Muslim and other concepts combined into one. Their logo is very creative. It is Don Antonio Blanco’s signature being folded and then opened again on a piece of paper so it mirrors one another which actually looked like a sitting and meditating person. Sometimes it also looks like a woman figure.

Dear Greensters,

Visiting a school for deaf children was one of our inspiring moments. We make friends with them. They are so clever. In one video, you can watch how Mrs. Dede (the teacher) greeted us with "today, let's learn together" and "thank you" in a sign language.

The second video: you can watch the pantomime performed by Deni Aristian. He won a pantomime competition months ago. Congrats, Deni!

The third video: Gresya Sinaga performed 'Peacock Dance' very beautifully. She won many dance competitions so far. She can't hear the music but she dances with her heart! Awesome! Congrats, Gresya.

The fourth video: It is me! I can say 'nama saya Javier' in a sign language.

Thank you for watching.
Dear Greensters,

It's me Javier. A couple of months ago, we went to a special school that is for people who cannot talk. They also cannot hear well. Both disabilities make them cannot speak well. They use a sign language when they communicate to each other. The name of the school is SLB-B Jimbaran - Bali. The school was opened since May 7th, 1984.
Tips to prevent us from deafness:

Be careful when you clean your ears. Don't push the cotton bud too deep inside the ears. But, clean your ears every week so that the holes are not full with earwax.

See ENT doctor regulary every 1 - 3 months for checking up. ENT stands for Ear - Nose - Throat. In Indonesia, it is called 'dokter THT' or 'dokter Telinga - Hidung - Tenggorokan'.

Don't use earphones with a loud volume. Use earphones when you really need it and use it in a normal volume. If you always hear a loud noise, your hearing ability can decrease by time.

Communicate with deaf children through writings

We went to the school to learn sign language so that we can communicate with them. We also learn some shortcuts for sign language, for example: I, you, together, thank you and much more. It took only half an hour for us to almost master the sign language. You only need to remember and practice it regularly.

Tips when first communicating with deaf children:
usually they can write. So, write some questions for your deaf friends and ask them to answer them in writing. That's a way you can communicate with them. Then, combine it with the sign language. You will become friends after that. They like to have friends. So, just be friendly and consider them as normal persons.

Dear Greensters,

This is how the preparation before we planted the coral reefs. We have to provide substrates first. Substrates are a kind of media to grow the coral reefs. The materials are simple, such as: sand, cement, tile grout and small PVC pipes which you install in a concrete. It take a couple of hours to make the substrates dry. Then, we write our names on a piece of water-resistant paper with a permanent marker to stick into a piece of coral inside the substrate. Then, it's ready to be planted under the sea in the depth of 5 to 10 meters.

Coral reefs are homes for sea creatures. So, let's plant more and make our ocean greener and healthier.

Dear Greensters,

Coral, a very colorful animal that has interesting facts. Corals are very interesting and made The Green Team Indonesia wanted to know more about it.

The Green Island is a perfect place to know about the corals. Mr. Wayan is the guide. He told us some facts about the corals. Corals are animals, not plants. Corals can be cut into small pieces, but some parts aren't allowed to be cut. Corals grow 0.5 - 1 cm every month. After 15 minutes without sea water, corals get stressed and give away saliva that marked the time when it needs water. Small sea creatures live in corals such as small fish, prawns and other creatures.

Hi, my name is Chloe and I am the President of the Green Team for 2014 - 2015.

Green Team is a group that does good things for the Earth. Well, not only the Earth but for everyone else. Green Team to me is like a part of my life already. Everything that we do is like our routine. Sometimes, I feel really grateful for helping the Earth to grow better and helping others-in-need. Even though we sometimes do something we don’t like, at the end we’re always happy to have the chance of making a better future.

I joined Green Team because of the activities that they do. It actually amazed me and made me want to join the Green Team. We started from small things to save the Earth. But now, we had a lot of improvements. From a very small chance of being able to help the Earth to a really big chance of being able to make the Earth a better place. It needs a lot of hard-work and commitment to do it, but I believe it can come true if we do it together and by hand-in-hand.

It is an honor for me to have a chance of being the President of the Green Team. I will do my best to try and help the Green Team to reach their higher state of being able to save the Earth and help others-in-need.

Please join Green Team and follow our blog for more information and there will be more excitements to come! I hope this blog and our activities can inspire us all to do the same or much better than these. Always remember that small things will have great impacts if we do it together with heart.

Thank You! :)

Dear Greensters,

This is Vanessa!

I am so happy because I found so many frogs in my garden. There are 'green frogs' and bigger frogs. So, I wrote about one of them which is a river toad called 'Bangkong River Toad'. In Indonesian language, it is called 'Kodok Bangkong Sungai'. I sent the photo and the essay about this Bangkong River Toad to Tunza-ecogeneration & UNEP for their monthly event of May 2014. The title of the competition is "Collective Intelligence Project: Our Neighborhood World Biodiversity Project". The event was to celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity. We just need to submit photos and essays about endangered-to-extinction species in our country. So, I sent this Bangkong River Toad. I found it was hiding under the shrubs of my Turmeric plants. I didn't win the competition, but I am happy because Tunza-Ecogeneration & UNEP included the photo and essay I sent in their 'Biodiversity Map'.

I have another story for you. Every night, I always go to my garden and find a green toad hanging on a Papaya plant. I like to call it 'Toady". Toady is always at the same spot every night! It is fun to find Toady and their friends (Bangkong River Toads) in my garden. I heard they are poisonous but I think
they have an important role to our environment. They can predict the rain and they eat mosquitoes / bugs / insects / flies. I also heard that toads are very sensitive to the environment. They breath through their skins. So, I think our garden is healthy because I still find many toads around. It means there is no pollution in my garden. It also means I don't use any chemicals in my garden.

Dear Greensters,

It was fun and interesting to visit 'Yayasan Lengis Hijau'. For us, technology can help us a lot, but technology is also ruining our beautiful Earth. Including the technology of creating cooking oil. Cooking oil is one of the important ingredients for cooking. But, if we don't use it wisely and properly, it can create diseases to ourselves and harm our planet.

This is one of the best ways that people can do to save the Earth by recycling the used cooking oil into biodiesels. But, it still needs a lot of hard work to do. And without the help of others and community, the mission to save our Earth and to be healthy is really hard to achieve. It must come from ourselves. Don't use cooking oils more than 3 times and don't dispose it on the ground or in the sink.

If you can find a collecting point of used cooking oil in your city or community, that would be very helpful. But, if not, then all you can do is to put the used cooking oil in a plastic bag, close it tightly and put in the trash bin. This way, you don't poison the Earth by throwing it directly on the ground.

I hope that more and more people like 'Yayasan Lengis Hijau' will do the same with the help of government. But most of all, just start it from small: our own family.

To understand more about this, please watch the video of interview between Kirana Putri Kusnadi and Mr. Endra / Mr. Tri of 'Yayasan Lengis Hijau'.

Thank you.

Let's Love Our Earth!

Best Regards,

Hi! It's Sharon!

Today, I will tell you guys tips on how to use cooking oil properly. We got lots of knowledge from Yayasan Lengis Hijau that we visited few days ago. Thank you to Mr. Endra Setyawan and Mr. Tri Hermawan for the useful information.

Using the same cooking oil 3 times in maximal : It is much more better and healthier to use the cooking oil 3 times in maximal, because when you use it many times it will become dirty and unhealthy for your body and it contains toxins already. The toxins may cause degenerative diseases like cancer.

The thickness of used cooking oil

Avoid disposing the waste cooking oil to the ground : Waste cooking oil have dirt or sorts of poison in them. So, if you disposed it to the ground, the ground will be poisoned and when you plant fruits or vegetable, the result will be a poison also and when you eat it you will be poisoned too.

Avoid disposing to the rubbish bin : When you dispose the waste cooking il to the rubbish bin, the cooking oil will also end up to the ground.

While using the cooking oil, 125 degrees celsius is the maximal temperature: When it reaches 125+ degrees Celsius, it will produce poison by itself.

Testing the biodiesel

Avoid disposing to your sink : When used cooking oils dry, it will become solid and when it becomes solid your sink will be clogged and it will also be broken.

Store your cooking oil in a proper place: Close the cap tightly and store it in a cool and dark place. Direct sunlight can accelerate the breakdown process.

Always use new cooking oil to fry: because used cooking oil contains chemicals that can cause cancer.

Make sure to heat the oil before frying your food: so that the frying process is not taking so long. Don't fry your food too long because the longer you heat the oil, it will produce chemicals that are poisonous.
